June is Pride Month

Pride Month and the Month of the Sacred Heart

June is a month marked by two significant observances. For many, it is Pride Month, a time when LGBTQ+ persons and their families reflect on their stories, celebrate their identities, and seek greater understanding, acceptance, and belonging. For Catholics, June is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a profound symbol of God's boundless love, mercy, and compassion for all people.

At first glance, these observances may seem unrelated. Yet both invite us to reflect upon a foundational truth of our faith: the inherent dignity of every human person. The Church teaches that every person is created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27). Human dignity is not earned, achieved, or granted by others. It is a gift bestowed by God at the moment of creation. Because of this, every person deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and love.

Throughout the Gospels, we encounter Jesus drawing near to those who felt marginalized, misunderstood, or excluded. He consistently crossed social boundaries to encounter people where they were, offering them dignity, friendship, healing, and hope. The Sacred Heart reminds us that God's love is never distant or conditional. Rather, it is a love that reaches outward, embraces, accompanies, and seeks communion. As we honor the Sacred Heart this month, we are invited to ask ourselves: How can our hearts become more like the heart of Christ? The answer begins with recognizing the sacred worth of every person we encounter. It calls us to listen before judging, to accompany before condemning, and to create communities where all people know they are loved by God and welcomed as members of the human family.

For LGBTQ+ persons, Pride Month often represents a desire to be seen, heard, and valued. As Christians, we may not always agree on every aspect of culture, politics, or theology, but we can and must affirm the dignity of every person. The call to love our neighbor is not optional. It is at the very center of the Gospel. The Sacred Heart of Jesus reveals a God whose love overflows for humanity. It is a heart wounded yet open, vulnerable yet strong, merciful yet transformative. When we contemplate the Sacred Heart, we are challenged to become people whose own hearts are widened by compassion and whose communities reflect the radical hospitality of Christ.

This June, may we pray for a world where every person knows they are beloved by God. May we continue to uphold the dignity of all people, reject hatred and discrimination in every form, and build communities rooted in encounter, respect, and authentic Christian love.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus teach us how to love more deeply, listen more attentively, and welcome more generously, so that all may come to know the God whose heart remains forever open to the world.
